Barla-Trinamul merger in air - Ruling party ‘best’ option

BIRESWAR BANERJEE AND AVIJIT SINHA

Siliguri, June 25: The John Barla-led breakaway faction of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad today hinted that some of its leaders wanted a merger with the Trinamul Congress, given the lack of clarity on inclusion of more mouzas in the GTA.

“We often face unpleasant questions from supporters who ask what we have achieved by joining hands with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. It is getting tough for us to answer them as we are utterly confused, particularly after the state’s decision to hold the GTA polls on July 29 and Morcha’s dilly-dallying over it,” a senior leader and a close aide of Barla said today.

The dissident leaders also feel that joining Trinamul would help address their supporters’ immediate demands in the Dooars and Terai.

“Many of us have started holding informal talks with Trinamul because we believe the party, which is at the helm of affairs in Bengal, can meet our long-standing demands related to socio-economic development,” the Barla faction leader said.

The leader said it was unclear whether more mouzas would be given to the GTA. “So, we are now more concerned about our basic demands like land rights, schools, colleges, roads, employment opportunities and health services, because these are problems raised by our supporters repeatedly. By joining Trinamul, we can bring in more tribal people to support us and in the party’s favour, as people in the Dooars are not interested to join the CPM or the Congress, which have failed to meet their aspirations over decades,” the leader said.

Barla, while speaking to The Telegraph last week, said his faction would not severe ties with Morcha and continue the movement for statehood and the inclusion of more mouzas in the GTA.

But yesterday, no one from Barla’s faction attended the Morcha meeting in Darjeeling, citing illness and preoccupation with other programmes.

“It is not that we will severe ties with the Morcha overnight but our relation with Trinamul has to be strengthened. The party needs tribal leaders to spread its base in the Dooars while we need a political party that can meet most of our demands. Trinamul is the ideal platform,” one of the leaders said.

The dissidents, sources said, are divided among themselves on the issue. While some opine that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha banner is enough for them to continue garnering support, others feel Trinamul is a better alternative.

Sukra Munda, one of the frontline leaders of dissidents, said: “We had excellent relations with Trinamul before the Assembly polls last year. Since then, there had been no confrontation between us and relations have not snapped,” he said. “Under the changed political circumstances, a renewal of ties and mutual relations cannot be ruled out.”

Trinamul leaders, asked about the prospect of Barla joining the party, said talks were on. “The prime agenda of Mamata Banerjee is to strive for consistent development of backward people and areas where they live. She is serious about simultaneous development of the hills, Terai and Dooars,” north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb said.

His colleagues in Jalpaiguri, who are entirely concentrating in Dooars, acknowledged that talks are on with tribals and even Morcha leaders and its supporters. “People in the Dooars have well understood that Trinamul can help them in achieving the basic demands and facilities,” said Chandan Bhowmik, Jalpaiguri district Trinamul president.(TT)

Gurung takes dig at Trinamul

AVIJIT SINHA

Bagdogra, June 25: Bimal Gurung today said the Trinamul Congress would have to walk several miles to create a decent support base in the hills.

He left for Delhi today to meet Union home minister P. Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee.

“Trinamul, which is foraying into the hills now, does not enjoy the support of even one per cent of the entire hill population. During the late eighties, when the DGHC polls were held, the GNLF used to enjoy support of 60 per cent of the people in hills while the CPM had remaining 40 per cent with it. Even then, the CPM could not manage to do anything during the polls,” the Morcha president said outside the Bagdogra airport.

“We, on the other hand, have the support of 99 per cent of the people while the remaining parties, including Trinamul, share the remaining 1 per cent. So, we are not too concerned (about Trinamul’s foray in the hills),” he said.

Gurung, who reiterated that his party had not taken any decision on participation in the GTA polls, said, the Morcha’s decision had nothing to do with the state’s decision. “Whatever the state does for the GTA polls is up to it. We will decide on our part, after contemplating over certain issues and factors. The decision would be announced in due time,” he said.

According to political observers, participating in the polls is a major issue before the party, particularly after Trinamul has started venturing into the hills.

“Though in a low-key manner, Trinamul has initiated a consistent political exercise in the hills, inviting people, including Morcha supporters, to join the party. It is naturally a pertinent question before the Morcha leaders whether they can really abstain from polls,” an observer said.

“Morcha leaders are confident of the people’s support in case the contest is against parties like the ABGL, CPRM or even the CPM as thousands are against these parties.”

“But Trinamul lacks a negative image. Instead, it has a clear and attractive image among people in hills, the primary reason being the six trips by the chief minister to the hills in one year, her announcements and implementation of elaborate projects. This is an important factor which has left the Morcha wondering about the polls,” the source said.

Administrative sources confirmed that at the meeting with Morcha leaders held on June 16, the state made it clear that it will go ahead with the GTA polls. It was announced today that the GTA elections would be held on July 29.

Gurung said the Morcha was yet to decide on the presidential elections. “We will visit Pranab Mukherjee, who is still the Union finance minister, and hold talks with him on certain issues,” Gurung said.

The decision to meet Mukherjee before he resigns as finance minister and Chidambaram, sources said, hints that the Morcha wanted its ties with the Congress to be strengthened, while distancing itself from Trinamul.

“The Morcha resents the Trinamul’s decision to expand base in the hills and might try to get close to the Congress,” said a source. Kurseong MLA Rohit Sharma, Darjeeling municipality chairman Amar Singh Rai, central committee member P.T. Ola and study forum member R.B Bhujel are accompanying Gurung to New Delhi. “We are likely to stay in Delhi for two-three days and then visit Calcutta to speak with the chief minister. Whatever decision we take on the polls, will be after we finish these visits,” Gurung said.(TT)

Parishad tells JMM not to aid Morcha

SANTOSH K. KIRO

Ranchi, June 25: A tribal delegation from north Bengal today met Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Shibu Soren in Ranchi and requested him not to support the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in its battle for statehood.

Members of the Bengal and Jharkhand chapters of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad urged Soren to instead back their fight for autonomy of the Terai and Dooars under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

“We spoke to Guruji about our demands . Our effort was to highlight the fact that his party’s support to the Morcha would go against the interests of the tribal people in (north) Bengal, many of whom migrated more than 200 years ago from Jharkhand,” said Birsa Tirkey, the Bengal state unit president of the Parishad.

Soren is said to have assured the delegation that he would act only in the interest of the tribals.

“Guruji has asked me to study the memorandum given to him (by the north bengal tribal leaders). He assured them that our party will take a stand that will be in the interest of the tribal people,” said Vinod Pandey, a JMM core committee member who was present at the meeting.

Tirkey said the tribals of north Bengal do not want a separate state, unlike the Morcha. Neither do they want the Gorkha Territorial Administration area to be formed.

On June 15, Soren along with son Hemant and a few party leaders visited Darjeeling and met Gurung and other Morcha leaders.

As the JMM had led a statehood movement for Jharkhand with success, the Morcha had asked Soren to extend his support to their cause.

“We discussed the political developments in the state and the region. We have decided to extend all possible political support. We have the experience of being able to carve out a separate state,” Soren had said. (TT)

Surprise in Sikkim House - Rebel SDF leader Golay in Assembly for the first time after 2009

NIRMAL MANGAR

Gangtok, June 25: P.S. Golay, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) MLA who had not attended the House since 2009, appeared in the Assembly today, the first day of the budget session.

The 42-year-old leader, who has often said he is unhappy with the SDF leadership, drove to the Assembly around 9.40am, more than an hour before the session was scheduled to start at 11am.

Dressed in a dark blue shirt, light brown cotton trousers and a red tika on his forehead, Golay took a seat in the second row of the House. He was the first member to enter today, but except exchanging greetings with MLAs Am Prasad Sharma and Chandra Maya Subba, Golay only read the documents placed on the table in front of him.

He was the only member who did not stand up when chief minister Pawang Chamling entered the House.

Before today, Golay was in the Assembly in the 2009 when he took oath as an MLA. He was nominated as the chairman of the state commerce and industries department that year, but he resigned from the post on March 22, 2011.

Although Golay has not resigned from the party, or has he been expelled, he has said at several public meetings that he is “not happy with the party leadership”.

Golay is one of the founding members of the SDF that was established in 1994 and has been an MLA for four terms (1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009).

He was a cabinet minister and had been elected from the Soreng constituency in West Sikkim three times before he was asked by the leadership to contest from Upper Burtuk in East Sikkim in 2009.

Although Golay won that year, he distanced himself from the party after that.

The House, which usually has few occupants, was packed today.

Around 50 supporters of Golay also gathered outside the Assembly gate while the leader attended the session. “We have come to extend our moral support,” one of them said. Some supporters even said that a party under Golay would be floated soon.

Golay did not speak in the House today, nor did he answer questions on his sudden appearance. “I will speak in the budget session tomorrow. Until then, please wait,” he told the reporters outside the House. He left the Assembly around 11.45am after governor Balmiki Prasad Singh’s address.(TT)
