CII global boost to hill, Dooars tourism

VIVEK CHHETRI

Darjeeling, Feb. 24: The CII has invited around 50 stakeholders of the tourism industry from 13 countries across the world to explore the tourism potential of Darjeeling, the Dooars, and Sikkim.

“More than 50 people including tour operators, hoteliers and travel writers will be visiting India (as part of the programme). This year, we have decided to focus on north Bengal and Sikkim as we are of the opinion that tourism still has a lot of potential in this region,” Saugat Mukherjee, the regional director, CII (east), told The Telegraph over the phone from Calcutta.

The drive is called Destination East.

Mukherjee added that delegates from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Russia, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and China will start arriving in Calcutta from tomorrow.

“Twenty-eight invitees from Thailand, Vietnam, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Malaysia will visit Siliguri, Darjeeling, Gangtok and the Dooars. They will arrive in Siliguri on February 26 and have an interaction with the local stakeholders and the north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb,” said Mukherjee.

“We are not confining the programme only to field visits. We are also holding a buyer-seller meet in Calcutta on March 2 and 3 so that business opportunities can be explored by the visiting delegates and our stakeholders,” he said.

Of the 50 domestic invitees who will attend the event in Calcutta, 30 are from outside Bengal.

Twelve delegates from Thailand and Malaysia will be visiting the Sunderbans, while the rest of them will be going to Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

“Even though our primary focus area is north Bengal and Sikkim, we are trying to provide a platform to the rest of the tour operators based in east India,” said Mukherjee.

Tourism industry in the Darjeeling hills has been hit in the past three years because of the statehood agitation.

But even when the region is peaceful, tour operators complained about the absence of an aggressive marketing.

Around 3.5 lakh domestic tourists and 40,000 foreigners visit the hills in a year. Tour operators say it is time the figures increased.(Telegraph)

Pedalling up for Homes

RAJEEV RAVIDAS

Kalimpong, Feb. 24: Thirteen cyclists from the United Kingdom, Australia and Spain are pedalling up to Kalimpong from Calcutta to raise funds for Dr. Graham’s Homes, the school that suffered extensive damage in the September earthquake. The team that started from Calcutta on Sunday is scheduled to arrive here tomorrow.

“(The) 13 volunteers from the UK, Australia and Spain are giving up their personal time and paying for all expenses to cycle some 670km over seven days to raise funds and help Dr Graham’s Homes recover from the disastrous earthquake (measured 6.8 on the Richter scale) which had caused substantial structural damage to the school building and estate,” Ken Hammond, an alumnus of the institution, wrote in www.Drgrahamshomes.co.uk.

Hammond, who is from Aberdeen in Scotland, is the only former student of the school in the 13-member team. The 111-year-old school building, 19 of the 22 cottages that house the co-educational institution’s boarders, and classrooms of the junior and senior schools had developed cracks in the September 18 earthquake. The Katherine Memorial Chapel and Steele Memorial Centre, the school’s infirmary, were also damaged by the tremors.

Hammond, who passed out of the school in 1972, has appealed for donations to help repair the school. “It (the ride) offers an opportunity to help the less fortunate and impoverished kids by raising funds and supporting their education in Homes,” he wrote.

Homes bursar David Foning said the cyclists had asked their friends to sponsor their trips, while paying for the journey themselves. “The funds given by the sponsors will be donated to the school,” said Foning.

The team reached Siliguri this evening.“The ride is supported by the UK Committee of Dr Graham’s Homes, a registered Scottish Charity, supporting the school,” Hammond wrote.

The members have been cycling for nearly 100km everyday since they started from Calcutta.

“I will actually share thoughts on the trip and the things we have all seen and experienced here, but not till we get to Kalimpong. It is difficult to put it correctly, as looking through Western eyes it is difficult to see it as they do, which would explain why we do not understand why they live as they do!,” Alan, a member of the team, wrote in his blog.(Telegraph)

Barla to bat with Morcha on territory

Siliguri, Feb. 23: Ousted president of the Dooars-Terai regional committee of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad John Barla will speak along with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders for the inclusion of the Dooars and the Terai in the hill set up at the all-party meeting in Calcutta tomorrow.

Barla’s presence would help the hill party to prove before the high power committee led by former Justice Shyamal Sen that the tribal population of the Dooars and the Terai are backing them on the issue of inclusion.

“Even today Barla is the principal and the most popular leader in the Terai and the Dooars. We have confidence in him. Tomorrow he will be present at the meeting and speak with us in favour of including the mouzas of the Terai and the Dooars in the GTA,” Giri said before leaving for Calcutta today.

The Morcha has asked for the inclusion of 399 mouzas — 199 from the Terai, 196 from the Dooars and four in Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri district— in the hill set up.

“I will surely attend tomorrow’s meeting because the entire tribal population of the Terai and the Dooars is in favour of inclusion in the GTA and the formation of GATA (Gorkhaland Adivasi Territorial Administration). Some other like-minded Parishad leaders will accompany me and we would, along with Morcha representatives, speak in favour of the demand,” Barla told The Telegraph over the phone from Calcutta.

Barla had been expelled from the Parishad in December. “I am very much with the Parishad and I do not accept the decision of the state committee or the president. We are still working for the organisation,” he said.

The state leaders of the Parishad, however, said Barla would be denied entry to the meeting if he tried to “pose” as a tribal leader. “We met the chairperson (former Justice Shyamal Sen) yesterday and submitted detailed documents to prove that Barla is no longer in the Parishad now. His primary membership has been cancelled,” said Birsa Tirkey, the state president of the Parishad.(Telegraph)

Barfee stars relish mist and hill cuisine

Darjeeling, Feb. 23: Priyanka Chopra is in love with the mist, Ranbir Kapoor cannot stop himself from appreciating the local cuisine and the entire Barfee team seems to be simply enjoying the taste of Darjeeling.

Anurag Basu, the director of the film, seems to be finally breathing easy with the shooting going on smoothly in the Darjeeling hills in his second attempt. The team had to pack up mid-way through the shoot in June last year after failing to manage the crowd at Chowrastha.

“I did come up with a (Darjeeling) set in Mumbai (Film City) even though I had wanted to shoot the entire film here. We were also planning to go to Ooty but then Saumitra da (Saumitra Mohan, the district magistrate of Darjeeling), who was in Mumbai on a personal trip, met me and assured me of all help. This time, we met everybody, including Mr (Bimal) Gurung, and things are fine,” said Basu.

With no disturbances on the set, the stars, too, seem to be enjoying their stay in the hills. “I will miss the mist as I have to leave for Hyderabad tomorrow to shoot for Krissh. I have my accommodation down here in the hotel and as I open the windows every morning, the mist enters my room,” said Priyanka.

The actress had earlier tweeted on her stay in Darjeeling: “Our hotel was such a quaint beautiful place n my room overlooks the mountains…the mist says hello every morning…sigh!!! Sooo romantic.”

Ranbir, who plays a deaf and mute character called Barfee, said: “It is not a very scientific character in a way as it does not involve a lot of technicalities of using sign languages. We are using a method which is acceptable to the audience. The film is basically a romantic-comedy.”

In between shooting, Ranbir is enjoying the local cuisine. “We had gone to Kungas (a well known restaurant in town) and Ranbir simply enjoyed the local food there,” said Basu.

Priyanka’s character is about an autistic girl. “The special thing about my character is that when the role is about different behavioural people, one starts to think about sadness and morbidity. This is a fun film; it is a happy film and a warm film which shows special people in a very real way. It is a laughable film,” she said.

In fact, Basu had first thought of christening the film “Silence.” “We thought that with a title like ‘Silence’, people would start thinking of the film of a particular genre, like the Mr Bean character,” said Ranbir, before Priyanka added: “People start thinking with another perception (with such a title) but the film is very warm.”
The shooting in the hills will continue till February 29.(Telegraph)

GTA queries hit Trinamul growth

Siliguri, Feb. 22: Trinamul efforts to expand its base in the Terai and the Dooars have been hit badly with party leaders complaining that they were having to face uncomfortable questions on the demand to include some plains mouzas in the new hills set-up.
Although the questions are coming from the common man, the task has been made more difficult by outfits like the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad, which have considerable clout in the tea belt and are opposing the GTA and the territory panel.
“So far, we have opened units on only 45 tea estates in the Dooars (out of the 160-odd gardens) and are yet to focus on the Terai. In course of our campaign at the grassroots-level, we are facing uncomfortable questions. In that case, we have to steer our discussions and limit it to only tea. But questions are cropping up, specially on the GTA and on the Morcha demand,” said Joachim Buxla, the president of the Trinamul Tea Plantation Workers’ Union.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has been demanding that some of the plains mouzas be brought under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. The Trinamul government has formed a committee to look into the demand, which has invited widespread protests from the Dooars and the Terai. The inclusion of Morcha members in the committee has also drawn criticism.
“There is no denying that questions are being tossed at us on the relevance of forming a territory committee. In such cases, we urge the people to keep faith in the chief minister and highlight the plans that she has for the Dooars and Terai,” Buxla said.
Other Trinamul trade union leaders said they were having to live with “political uneasiness” in a region where tea gardens are major vote banks.
“People are asking us why the government is not simply announcing that no new area will be made part of the GTA instead of forming a committee. We have no reply to this. Also, we have no answer to why four Morcha representatives, and none from the Dooars and the Terai, are on the panel. This is having a negative effect on our plans to expand our base in the brew belts. We are apprehensive that the CPM and Citu, which had lost base after the emergence of Parishad and Trinamul ahead of the Assembly polls, might make a comeback,” the leader said.
He said while CPM leaders were always speaking on the committee and the GTA, Trinamul was being forced to be silent.
Buxla, too, admitted that government intervention was needed to gain people’s confidence. “Being a member of the North Bengal Development Council, I had tried to provide some feedback about the common man’s aspirations to the government,” he said. “There is no doubt that government intervention is required to gain the confidence of the brew belt.”(Telegraph)

Gurung to meet PC on Feb 28

Darjeeling, Feb. 22: The Gokha Janmukti Morcha said today that a delegation led by party chief Bimal Gurung will meet the Union home minister on February 28 to discuss the delay in the formation of the administrative set-up for the Darjeeling hills.
Gurung will be accompanied by Morcha general secretary Roshan Giri and Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chhetri when he meets home minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi.
“The three leaders will definitely take up with the home minister issues like the delay in the the formation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration,” said a Morcha leader.
Morcha leaders said “it has come to our knowledge” that different central ministries had sent their opinions on the GTA Bill passed by the Assembly to Chidambaram.
“Since the observations have come, there should not be a problem in getting the President’s assent,” said a Morcha leader.(Telegraph)
