A clash between the Sikkim Democratic Front and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha on Wednesday evening has left SDF Organisation Secretary Avinash Yakha injured. The clash reportedly took place when Yakha was returning from a constituency level meeting in Geyzing. He had stopped on the Yangyang-Pabung Road in South Sikkim for some respite when SKM supporters allegedly attacked him.
According to Yakha, five SKM supporters started a conversation in the course of which some more SKM supporters arrived and suddenly started assaulting him with rods and stones. Yakha has sustained several injuries in his head and arms and is currently undergoing treatment at the Central Referral Hospital in Tadong.
However, the SKM leadership has denied the allegation with SKM leader Jacob Khaling saying, “We did not attack Yakha. This is part of the SDF’s conspiracy to defame our party. Our party flag was torn down by SDF supporters at Bermiok following which our supporters protested. It was SP (West) DB Giri who stopped SKM vehicles to provoke our leaders. We refrained from involving in any form of clash with the SDF.”
He added Giri arrested SKM youth leader Topzang Bhutia instead of levying a fine on him for driving an overloaded car. SKM leader Roshan Pradhan, ruling out the allegation, said, “If we were to attack the SDF we could have done it on the spot.”

Pradhan further accused the SDF leader and said, “Yakha is everyone’s target because of his attitude. He cheated Temi Tarku residents in the previous election.”
Meanwhile, the SDF in a press release today accused the SKM of trying to disrupt its meeting despite the SDF maintaining peace. The ruling front further accused the SKM of spreading violence across the state and urged for the immediate arrest of the SKM youths involved in the clash.
The SKM supporters identified are Roshan Pradhan of Ranipool, Phurden Lepcha of Nandugoan and Tika Hang Subba of Sombaria. They are presently absconding and have been charged under section 147 of the IPC for spreading violence and physically assaulting Yakha. The police are on their lookout.
