Gurung's successor in GTA Election process begins

The process has started to appoint a successor to Bimal Gurung, who quit as chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration after the creation of Telangana state was announced.

Invitation letters have been sent to the arrested members of the GTA ahead of the September 4 meeting of the GTA Sabha to elect the new chief executive.

GTA principal secretary RD Meena today said letters of invitation have reached the 14 arrested members of the hill body lodged in different jails in Siliguri and Jalpaiguri.

The GTA has 45 elected members and five nominated members. After Gurung resigned from the post of chief executive on July 31, the GJM leadership proposed the name of Virku Biswal, a nominated member, to succeed him, but the state government rejected the proposal.

Meanwhile, Gurung on Saturday said the GJM would participate in the GTA meeting only if the arrested leaders are released from prison unconditionally.

With normal life continuing to remain paralysed in the Darjeeling hills, a procession was today taken out from Chowk Bazar to the railway station in Darjeeling where a large number of CPRM workers participated.

CPRM spokesperson Gobind Chettri said his party would welcome chief minister Mamata Banerjee to Darjeeling.

“As the chief minister of the state, Mamata Banerjee can go anywhere in the state and we will welcome her. However, she should respect the sentiments of the Gorkhas,” he said pointing out that the statehood demand was 107 years old. (PTI)

Dooars GJM threatens stir against Lama’s detention

Keeping with their move of arresting GJM leaders and activists, the police had arrested Dooars GJM central committee member Ashok Lama on the night of August 13 citing old cases.

Now, the Dooars unit of the party has threatened a stir in the plains if Lama is not released soon. The GJM leader has been granted bail in all cases except on the Sipchu incident, as the executive magistrate would be hearing the case. But although Lama is in Jalpaiguri jail since the past 12 days, there has been no hearing till date.

The delay has irked the Dooars GJM unit and made it suspicious. GJM leader Bishal Lama told this correspondent that “if the government sticks to its rough and tough stance and does not release our leaders, the ongoing movement in the Hills will spill over to the Dooars. If Lama is not released by Tuesday, we will begin a massive movement here too”.

He said arrests take place during an agitation, but undue detentions are not acceptable and GJM supporters will not remain mute spectators.

Further, GJM central committee member Rajesh Sharma said the party’s women’s wing will submit deputations to various departments and hold rallies and demonstrations.

While observers feel the government may not release the detainees for some time, the GJM believes Lama will be out soon since all those implicated in the Sipchu incident have been granted bail. Moreover, the leaders noted Lama was in Kalchini on the day of the Sipchu incident, and as proof, there is a case registered against him in the Kalchini police station on that day.

EPCS delegation meets CM

Around 40 members  of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Sikkim from all the four districts of the state led by MLA Menlom Lepcha, Rev PS Timgmo and mediator Remon Molommu today called on chief minister Pawan Chamling at his official residence Mintokgang.

Lepcha expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the chief minister for his support to the EPCS as also for the assistance he has extended to the entire Christian community of the state.

The delegates also submitted some of their pending demands and the chief minister assured full cooperation and support from him and his government. He informed them the government has already sanctioned Rs1 crore and other grants for an EPCS church being constructed in PNG School here in the capital.

Chamling noted that Sikkim is not only the most peaceful state in India, but also a model of a real secular state, adding his government has worked tirelessly towards making the state an example in more than one ways.

“We've always kept and secured the interests of all people and associations practicing different faiths in the state and will continue to do,” he reiterated.

The chief minister appealed to the delegates to participate actively and contribute in maintaining the goodwill of the state that his government has created and urged them to spread the message that the government has not left any stone upturned to uplift the weaker sections of society, especially by stressing on education.

जनसभालाई सम्बोधन गर्दै प्रवक्ता छेत्रीले चाडैनै गोर्खाल्याण्ड संयुक्त कार्वाही समितिसंग बैठक गरेर आन्दोलनको नयाँ रणनीति तयार गर्ने बताए। जनसभाबाट नै आज विधायक ड़ा छेत्रीले यसचोटीको विधानसभा शत्रमा पहाड़का तिनै जना विधायकहरुले भाग नलिने निर्णय लिएको बताएका छन्। विधायकहरुको विधानसभा शत्र वहिष्कारले आन्दोलनलाई सहयोग पुग्ने बताउँदै तिनले यसो गर्नाले सरकारलाई धेर असुविधा हुने तिनको भनाई छ। अहिले नै राज्य बनिन नसकिने कुरालाई जनता अघि राख्दै तिनले छुट्टै राज्यको निम्ति दिर्घकालिन संघर्षको आवश्यक्त रहेका बताए। ‘राज्य अनि केन्द्र सरकार दुवैले गोर्खाल्याण्डको मांगलाई दवाउन खोजेको होइन’ तिनले भने ‘यी दुवैले 2014मा सम्पन्न हुने लोकसभा चुनाउको गोटी खेल्दैछ’। सुरक्षाबलको आड़मा राज्यकी मुख्यमन्त्रीले आन्दोलनलाई शान्त पार्ने प्रयास गरेर केन्द्रसंग चुनाउको निम्ति वकलत गर्न कुरा डा. छेत्रीलो आजको जनसभामा खुलासा गरेका छन्। मुख्यमन्त्रीको पहाड़ भ्रमण अवधि लेप्चा समुदायका प्रतिनिधिहरु संग हुने बैठकको आलोचना गर्दै तिनले राज्यकोमा विकाश कोष नरहेको कारण लेप्चा विकास परिषर्दको गठन बेकार हुन बताए। ‘राज्यले जीटीएलाई त कोष प्रधान गर्न सकेन’ तिनले भने ‘अब लेप्चा डेपलभमेन्ट काउसिलले पैसा पाउँला?’ अन्तमा तिनले आफ्नो सम्बोधनमा आन्दोलित पहाड़को भ्रमण गरेर मुख्यमन्त्रीले केन्द्र सरकारलाई चुनौती दिन चाहेको आरोप लगाएका छन्।

क्रामाकपा नेता किशोर प्रधानले आजको जनसभालाई सम्बोधन गर्दै  छुट्टै राज्य गोर्खाल्याण्डको मांग शहिदहरुको सपना रहेको कारण केवल छुट्टै राज्यले मात्र शहिदहरुको सो सपना साकार हुने बताए। पहाड़मा हाल लगातार शान्तिमय ढ़ंगमा जुलूश र जनसभाहरु भइरहेको बताउँदै तिनले गोर्खाहरुले देशको संविधान अनुरुप शान्तिमय ढ़ंगमा गनातान्त्रीक आन्दोलन पनि गर्न सक्ने कुरालाई प्रमाणीत गरेको बताए। ‘छुट्टै राज्यको मांगमा पहाड़मा चलिरहेको हालको गणातान्त्रीक आन्दोलन देशको इतिहासमा लेखिने छ’ तिनले भने। आफ्नो सम्बोधनमा तिनले पहाड़को शान्तिप्रिय आन्दोलनमा सुरक्षा बलको कुनै प्रकारको आवश्यक्ता नरहेको बताए। ‘यस आन्दोलनलाई हामीले धर्यसाथ शान्तीमय ढ़ंगमा गैर-सम्प्रादायिक बनाएर अघि बढ़ाइनु पर्छ’ तिनले भने। यता जनमुक्ति सेकेन्डेरी टिचर्स आर्गनाइजेशनका प्रतिनिधि विजय प्रधानले आफ्नो सम्बोधनमा जन-एकता अघि राज्यको दमननीतिको हार हुने कुरा अधि राख्दै सरकारले छुट्टै राज्य गोर्खाल्याण्डको निर्माण प्रक्रिया अघि ल्याउनु पर्ने माग गरेका छन्। जुलूश अनि जनसभा कार्यक्रम पछि कालेबुङ शहर पुन: शुनशास रह्यो। बन्दोक कारण शहरको सम्पूर्ण दोकान-पाटहरु ठप्प रहेको छ भने यहाँका शैक्षिक संस्थानहरु लगायत अधिकांश सरकारी कार्यलयहरु समेत बन्द रहेको छ।
