Mamata clicks prospective tourist spots on her way to Kalimpong. Picture by Amit Datta |
March 1: Click, click, click…. iPad in hand, chief minister Mamata Banerjee put her trend-spotting skills to good use near Kalimpong this afternoon.
A little while later, had she turned south and summoned superhuman skills to zoom in on a corner called Jadavpur, she would have punched only one button: delete, delete, delete….
The scene at Jadavpur was far removed from the picture postcard scenes the chief minister was capturing so that the spots in the hills could be developed as tourist centres.
At the constituency where Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee bit the dust nine months ago but drew sizeable crowds last evening, the mighty Trinamul Congress was struggling to fill the road this evening as the party’s me-too padayatra crawled forward.
Today’s Trinamul procession was a warm-up to the reverse walkathon Mamata has threatened to undertake on Saturday when she is expected to retrace the route of Bhattacharjee who had protested the attack on a CPM office on the day of the general strike.

A host of Trinamul leaders — among the ministers were Partha Chatterjee and Manish Gupta who defeated Bhattacharjee — today walked (Bhattacharjee was on a jeep yesterday) from Jadavpur’s 8B bus stand to Gangulybagan.
If thousands of local CPM workers, sympathisers and residents had lined Bhattacharjee’s route last evening, less than half the number accompanied Mamata’s lieutenants today.
The turnout was so low that Trinamul workers were ferried in from different parts of the city. “There is no denying that party workers and sympathisers from across the city joined today’s procession. While Partha-da and Sovan (mayor Sovan Chatterjee) brought supporters from Behala and Tollygunge, Sudip-da (junior Union minister) brought supporters from north Calcutta,” said a Trinamul leader.
Trinamul MP Subrata Bakshi, who had joined the procession, put a spin. “Today’s procession was just a prelude to our big show on Saturday when Mamatadi would walk,” Bakshi said.
Some leaders suggested, only half in jest, that they never wanted today’s “semi-final” to be big and rob the Saturday “final” of its sheen.
One flop show doesn’t make a summer but the contrast between Jadavpur yesterday and today was hard to miss.(Telegraph)
Red panda census in 2 hill forests
The survey will cover the Neora Valley National Park in Kalimpong subdivision and Singalila National Park in Darjeeling.
Foresters said 61 teams will conduct the study in two phases — from March 3 to 7 and from April 5 to 9. Another survey would be conducted later. The reports will be submitted to the forest department by the end of this year.
Vipin Sood, the conservator of forest (wildlife), north Bengal, said this is the first time that a red panda census was being conducted in the Neora forest that got the status of a national park in 1992. “The counting of pandas at Singalila was done in 2002 and 78 animals were spotted then,” Sood said.
He said both direct and indirect methods would be used during the study. “Apart from direct sighting, the teams would also collect scat samples and look for scratch marks on trees.” The red panda is an endangered species categorised in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Elderly back Mall park - Seniors against amphitheatre

Darjeeling, March 1: Senior citizens of Darjeeling are against the razing of the more than 100-year-old Brabourne Park where an open-air theatre has been planned by the DGHC.
The senior citizens, who wanted to be identified as The Citizens Who Love Darjeeling, said the history of Brabourne Park in the Mall dates back to the late 19th century.
“The park was gifted to the Darjeeling municipality in 1897 by then Maharaja of Cooch Behar. Later, it was named after the governor of Bengal, Lord Brabourne. This structure is older than the famous Victoria Memorial in Calcutta, which was set up in 1921. Can you imagine mowing down Victoria Memorial or spoiling its premises by setting up a modern structure?” asked one of the elderly citizens.
The DGHC has started flattening the park, bringing down its level to that of the Mall. The DGHC under Subash Ghisingh had constructed a musical fountain in the park for Rs 20 lakh in 2006 but it does not function now.
The senior citizens are against the DGHC plan to build an amphitheatre on the park’s premises as part of the beautification drive for the Mall. The hill council has started revamping Darjeeling’s famous promenade and the first phase of the Rs 9 crore project is expected to be completed in five months.
“We fail to understand the logic behind setting up the amphitheatre when there are already two similar establishments in town — the Shrubbery Nightingale Park that has an open theatre and the Gorkha Ranga Manch Bhawan which has three centrally heated halls,” said another citizen. The citizens group said the amphitheatre would destroy the open space of the park — the only one in the heart of the town, the others having been spoilt over time.
Donovan Park is one of them. Once a well-laid tennis court with manicured lawns and the pride of the hills till the late 60s, the only remains of the park along NH55 now is a concrete portico, which seems to be constantly fighting for space with the mushrooming shops of the neighbourhood. Many of these shops open right into the pavement much to the chagrin of the pedestrians.
The Victoria Park, later renamed as Mahatma Gandhi Park, today houses the monstrous Gorkha Ranga Manch Bhawan, which blocks the view of Kanchenjungha.
“Victoria Park was great. It had a bandstand, swings, merry-go-rounds and huge open spaces. I remember Satyajit Ray had shot extensively in the area for Kanchenjunga,” recalled another senior citizen.
The park was torn apart to set up the Rabindra Bhawan. Later, it was renamed Bhanu Bhawan, which housed the paramilitary forces during the mid-80s before the entire structure was dismantled by the DGHC to come up with the seven-storied Gorkha Rangamanch Bhawan.
The story of Albert Park, built in 1916, is no different. Only a rusty iron gate bears testimony to the once enclosed space. “There was a Bengali gentleman who had a private zoo near the park. There were lovely cottages around and in the private zoo there were deer, wild cats and birds. I remember visiting the zoo with my friends,” said an old timer.
At a time when the parks have vanished from Darjeeling, the citizens want the DGHC to safeguard one of the few that still exist.
Anil Verma, administrator of the DGHC, said: “We are trying to make the Mall beautiful and tourist-friendly. Till date, no one has approached us with their grievances. If they come to us we can definitely discuss the issue to make the area even better.”(Telegraph)
Sikkim pins hope on Didi Swiss dream
Chamling at Bagdogra on Thursday. (Kundan Yolmo) |
Siliguri, March 1: Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling today said that the state would benefit if Mamata Banerjee’s dream of turning Darjeeling into Switzerland became a reality as tourists visiting the Queen of Hills might take a trip to the Himalayan state as well.
“I would be most happy if (Bengal) chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s dream of turning Darjeeling into Switzerland were to come true. Sikkim would also benefit if Darjeeling is developed because tourists always come to visit the region as a circuit that comprises Darjeeling, the Dooars and Sikkim. If there is an increase in the influx of tourists to Darjeeling... the same tourists would also visit our state,” Chamling told journalists at Bagdogra airport today.
Chamling’s comments came a day after Mamata announced in Darjeeling that a masterplan was being prepared to convert the place into Switzerland.
“We will work on joint ventures (with Bengal) to promote the tourism industry. We can also work on setting (up) industries together. There have not been formal talks on these issues (yet). But I will definitely take up the issues with her (Mamata) when we meet,” he said.
The chief minister was on his way back to Sikkim from Delhi where he had gone to receive three tourism awards that the state has won. Chamling received the “best state”, the Best State-Clean India Campaign and the most innovative and unique tourism project awards from President Pratibha Patil yesterday.
“Our government has been working for the past 18 years to build Sikkim as a prime tourist destination (in the country) and we have started getting recognition at the national level. Sikkim suffered great devastation in the earthquake last year. Despite that we bagged three awards, which is a great achievement. Tourists have already started visiting the state in great numbers,” Chamling said.
He added that the government would encourage more people to get involved in the tourism industry. “It would be better if all the people of Sikkim got engaged in the tourism industry,” Chamling said.(Telegraph)
Armed with iPad, CM on Swiss trail - Mamata clicks pictures of probable tourist hotspots

Kalimpong, March 1: Mamata Banerjee today scouted for niches which could be turned into tourist hotspots, clicking on her iPad quaint hill hamlets that she wants to develop as part of her project to turn Darjeeling into Switzerland.
During her three-hour journey from Darjeeling to Kalimpong with a convoy of 40 cars, Mamata stopped several times to inspect scenic spots and interact with the people. She told the officials of the tourism department that she would forward the pictures to them so that they found a place in the tourism project.
Government sources said Mamata was likely to hold a meeting with tourism officials accompanying her on this trip.
“She is exerting pressure on the tourism department to expedite the preparation of the master-plan to develop tourism in north Bengal. She has been taking the department’s officials with her so that they can also see what can be done,” said a senior official who was with her.
The chief minister was also accompanied by north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb, tourism secretary Raghavendra Singh and Darjeeling district magistrate Saumitra Mohan.
Mamata’s first stop today was the Ghum monastery. She had to skip the monastery tour yesterday because of heavy rain.
Making amends, Mamata today spent close to 10 minutes at the monastery exchanging greetings with the monks before the convoy headed towards Kalimpong. The chief minister took the Lopchu-Peshok Road to Teesta Bazar, skirting the route through Mungpoo, which has a museum on Rabindranath Tagore. The sky was overcast when Mamata left Darjeeling at 12.30pm.
At 9th Mile, before Teesta Bazar, Mamata asked the driver to stop.
Stepping out of the vehicle, she started taking pictures on her iPad. “Why don’t you build cottages here? This is such a beautiful place. Many people can come and stay here,” Mamata told the tourism secretary. “I have taken some pictures. I will send them to you. Please see what can be done here,” she said before taking her seat in the front beside the driver.
Yesterday, Mamata had told a gathering in Darjeeling that her master plan to convert the hills into Switzerland was underway. She had blamed the Centre for delaying the implementation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration.
“Today, on her way to Kalimpong, she was looking for places that have the potential to be turned into tourist spots,” an official said.
At Teesta Bazar near the Coronation Bridge, school students and local people had assembled to meet her. The convoy moved slowly as Mamata stopped or got off her vehicle to greet students returning home.
The chief minister also spent around 30 minutes with the students and teachers of Dr. Graham’s Homes, one of the premier schools in Kalimpong that was badly hit by the September 18 earthquake. Kalimpong’s MLA Harka Bahadur Chhetri was present at the school.
In a message to the students, Mamata said: “All the best to all my boys and girls. Be bright, be brave, be good students and most of all be good human beings, that is the main quality.”
She was all praise for Kalimpong-based educational institutions. “There are so many good institutions here. All are number one,” she said.
Mamata also paid tribute to the founder of Dr. Graham’s Homes, Rev. John Anderson Graham.
The chief minister will stay at a guest house at Deolo Point near Kalimpong tonight. A delegation from the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha will meet her tomorrow afternoon.

CM blames Centre for delay - Mamata promises to deliver on hill body but no assurance on GTA date
Darjeeling, Feb. 29: Mamata Banerjee today accused the Centre of delaying the implementation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration in the Darjeeling hills.
“The state government has done what it had to for the GTA. The Centre has left it pending. I went to Delhi on February 22 to discuss this issue with the Prime Minister. I met him and told him that the process should have been completed by now,” Mamata told a gathering at Gymkhana Club.
“Like the Morcha, it is also our dream to see the GTA implemented. When the GTA comes into effect, we will work together. We have promised to work together. What I have promised, I will deliver,” she told the audience, which also included the Morcha leadership and the three MLAs from the hills.
The chief minister, however, did not give any assurance that the GTA would be formed before March 27, the deadline set by the Morcha.
That the Morcha, too, has realised that the government will not be able to meet the deadline was evident when party chief Bimal Gurung refused to speak this evening though he was present on the dais. His name, too, was there as one of the speakers at the programme.
Instead, the Morcha chief directed party leader and Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chhetri to speak on his behalf.
“Bimal Gurung has said that he will speak only after March 27,” Chhetri told the 600-odd audience amid loud cheers. “Instead, he has delegated to me the responsibility of speaking on his behalf.”
But the Kalimpong MLA was all praise for the chief minister though he reeled off a list of demands before her.
“We had Bengali chief ministers. But now we have the chief minister of Bengal. She truly feels for us and so she keeps rushing up to the hills,” Chhetri said.
His demands included a waiver on electricity bills lying unpaid in the Darjeeling hills for the past three years.
Although the Morcha has asked the hill residents to pay their electricity bills from August last year after the GTA was signed in July, the party wants a waiver on the arrears on unpaid bills that has reached almost Rs 100 crore.
Mamata, who is herself seeking a moratorium from the Centre on payment of interest for the debt accumulated by the state government over the years, did not comment on the demand when she rose to speak.
But reacting to Chhetri’s remark that the dilapidated NH55 had been closed for more than a year, Mamata blamed the Centre for the delay in repairing the road that links Siliguri to Darjeeling.
“National highways are under the Centre. Why should a national highway remain without repair for so long? I have raised this issue with the Prime Minister. Like the national highway authority, we are also setting up our own state highway authority. Once it starts functioning, all roads in the state will be done up,” she said.
Mamata also announced some of the old projects: Rs 103 crore for rural electrification in the hills, Rs 155 crore for drinking water distribution, Rs 100 crore for tourism development, Rs 304 crore drinking water project for Kalimpong and ITIs and polytechnincs in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Mirik.
She said the master-plan on turning Darjeeling into Switzerland was underway. She inaugurated a museum on Chittaranjan Das at his residence Step Aside and a Tea Museum at Darjeeling Chowrasta.(Telegraph)
Squad lined up for Northeast tournament
The premier tournament for eight northeastern states is being organised by the Sikkim sports department and will be held at Paljor Stadium here from March 2 to 9.
The state team consists of players drawn from United Sikkim FC, Langsning FC Shillong, Sikkim Police, State Sports Academy and Sports Authority of India. Tenzing Tsephel Bhutia is the captain of the team, which is being coached and managed by Suresh Mukhia and Arjun Rai respectively.
Announcing the squad, SFA general secretary Menla Ethanpa said 26 players had been shortlisted for the weeklong selection camp that ended today.
“We have selected 22 best players for the Dr T Ao Memorial Cup. We hope our team will give a good performance and bring honour to Sikkim,” he said.
All the eight states are divided into two groups. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Assam are in Group A, while defending champion Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya are in Group B.
The players are banking on ground support and weather for a good performance. “We have been playing at Pajlor Stadium since our childhood. The weather conditions also suit us. These factors make a difference when we play against the away sides. We hope for a good show in the tournament. Support from the home crowd will also boost us,” said Thupden Tshering Bhutia.
Dr T Ao Memorial Cup was launched by the ministry of DoNER in 2003 and Sikkim will be hosting the event for the first time. Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will clash in the inaugural match on March 2.(Telegraph)
