The Kalimpong ACJM court today granted anticipatory bail to Gorkha National Liberation Front leader Maurice Kalikotay.
Kalikotay had been arrested on November
14 from his Eastmen Road residence for conducting a rally in Algarah
without seeking permission from the administration, which allegedly
created an air of tension in the area. He was also charged for selling
GNLF-commissioned CDs following an FIR by a person named Ruben Subba.
The GNLF leader had been earlier charged
under Sections 143/186 and 506 of the IPC and sent to 14 days judicial
custody. His lawyer had applied for anticipatory bail and it was
accepted by the court. Kalikotay is presently undergoing medical
treatment at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital due to some
health problems. Several GNLF members had gathered at the ACJM court
premises in the morning hopeful of Kalikotay’s release.
