Renewed statehood agitation unplanned: experts

KALIMPONG

Following the centre’s approval of Telangana, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha was forced to scrap the Gorkha Territorial Administration and restart the demand for a Gorkhaland state in the Hills. Amid this, the state government has started digging up pending charges on some GJM leaders and arresting them to dissuade the agitators.
But observers feel the GJM leadership has failed to map out the exact course of the movement going forward. They opine that though GJM leaders have started the agitation afresh, their dedication and honesty still need to be proved. It remains to be seen as to how the leaders will tackle the oppressive stance of the state government, maintained the observers.
They said the state government was able to “deceive” the GJM leadership and make them sign the GTA pact. The TMC-led government was apprehensive the announcement on Telangana would rekindle the agitation for Gorkhaland here, but had not expected the GJM to launch an aggressive movement so early, said the observers.
Meanwhile, GJM leaders such as Ramesh Lama, Anit Thapa and Amrit Yonjan have been arrested on charges dating some years back.
The GJM leadership, without proper discussions and planning, has once again started an agitation but it will fail to cause a major impact. The state government is well-prepared for a showdown and the recent transfer of officers shows its readiness, warned the observers.
