Sikkim/Gangtok, November 2:

He was speaking to reporters at Paljor Stadium, on Wednesday where United Sikkim Football Club has resumed their practice after a 20-day break.

United Sikkim has been invited to play in the Gorkha Gold Cup at Darjeeling which starts from November 4 with the participation of 14 teams from India, Bhutan and Nepal. The Gangtok based club will play its first match on November 8 though the club is still to learn about its opponent. The prize money for winners of Gorkha Gold Cup is Rs. 1.3 lakhs and Rs. 70,000 for the runners up. On a personal note, Bhaichung has always been coming forward for social causes in Sikkim and Darjeeling hills. He had donated a sum of Rs. 1.5 lakhs, a part of the prize money which he had won in the reality show ‘Jhalak Dikla Jha’ contest, for the Aiyla victims in Darjeeling. Boasting of Indian national team players like Rennedy Singh and Sushil Kumar Singh with three foreign players-Quinton Jacobs, Babatunde John Oladeli and Daniel Bidemi- along with a clutch of players from Sikkim and Darjeeling hills, United Sikkim is expected to do well in the Gorkha Gold Cup apart from attracting huge support from Darjeeling people. The squad has been together since July and has played in Durand Cup and Federation Cup coached by H Stanly Rozario.

United Sikkim has also lifted the State level Independence Day football tournament in Sikkim in August and had donated the prize money of Rs. 25,000 to Spastics Society of Sikkim which runs a special education and rehabilitation centre for disable children at Development Area here in Gangtok.

The presence of two footballers from Darjeeling hills in United Sikkim would also fetch support from the crowds. Midfielder Jiten Rai is from Kurseong and defender Pranesh Dewan is from Darjeeling. “It feels great to go and play in Darjeeling representing a team of Bhaichung Bhutia. I want to give a good performance there for my team and we hope that crowd will come to support us. This is a team of the hills and of Bhaichung Bhutia. We will also not disappoint the football lovers of Darjeeling”, said Jiten.

Pranesh said that it will be a proud moment for him to play for United Sikkim in his home town during the Gorkha Gold Cup. I have lots of friends there and hope to get support from them during the tournament, he said. United Sikkim senior manager Arjun Rai said that participation in the Gorkha Gold Cup is part of the club’s preparations for the upcoming second division I-League scheduled early next year.
“The tournament at Darjeeling will help us to prepare for the upcoming second division I-League. Our players have returned back to training after a 20-day break. We started practice from yesterday”, said Rai.

United Sikkim’s star midfielder Rennedy Singh is expected to join the squad today and will be playing in the Darjeeling tournament.
