MIRIK

Tension
gripped Mirik town today when GJM supporters, who had gathered to
observe the ‘janta sadak ma’ programme, were obstructed by the police.
But the people were in no mood to give in and faced the people in
uniform squarely.
Again, just when the rally was on the
point of dispersing, a police team coming from the opposite direction
tried to pass through the crowd. But the participants, already fired up
with the earlier incident, started shouting slogans against the police
and administration. They condemned the arrests of GJM leaders and
activists, police repression and continual raids. The police were left
with no option but to appeal the agitated crowd to calm down. They tried
to explain the arrests were being conducted as per the warrants and the
high court’s order.
The second day of the GJM’s ‘janta sadak
ma’ agitation saw people in huge numbers gathering in the streets of
Mirik. But no violence occurred although there was some tension during
the confrontation with the police.
