A
series of programmes were held today under the leadership of the
Janmukti Minority Sangathan (JMS) in Kalimpong. Town residents attended
the rally with great enthusiasm and gathered at Damber Chowk.
In spite of the arrest of Subhash Gupta,
the JMS treasurer, the participation in the rally and meeting was quite
overwhelming where several Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders were also in
attendance.
After the rally, a public meeting was
held at Damber Chowk where leaders such as Enos Das Pradhan and JB Rai
of the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee (GJAC), PB Ghatani of the
Congress and Mohan Poudyel of the CPRM were in attendance.
Poudyel said they would raise their
voice against the attitude of the police and state government. He vented
his anger on the state government asking it to refrain from spreading
false rumours to mislead people.
“The government cannot suppress the
ongoing agitation for statehood,” said Poudyel, noting the demand for
statehood started way back in 1907.
“The government is trying to tempt us
and suppress the ongoing agitation. The new agitation under the
leadership of Bimal Gurung has always been supported by the CPRM and
will always be,” said the CPRM leader.
