15 FAMILIES TO BE SHIFTED DUE TO RISE IN TISTA WATER LEVEL
(Mukesh Sharma)
Kalimpong, 11th July
It was a rained out morning in Kalimpong today with the season's heaviest showers resulting in several landslides threats to the residents.
The residents of Kalimpong had a little respite from the incessant rain from the last six days today as about a hour and a half rays of sun were seen .
The 15 families of 29 mile under NH31(A) have been advised to shift to near by school and other area sensing the danger of the slide due to massive cracks on the embankment of river Titsa.
The protection wall in the banks of river Tista at 29 mile had a breached along with massive crack on 30th June after which the local resident was force to leave in fear.some of the family stayed in the home and shops in the day time but at night were forced to lock their homes and stay in other area, but due to high rise in the water level of the river finally the civil administration today advised the 15 family to go to a safer place .A meeting of civil administration ,NHPC ,Police and 15 family was held today after which the advisory was given to all the families said Pritam Limboo Deputy Magistrate of kalimpong.
The NHPC team will be bearing all the expenses of the rent of all the families and also they will be compensating all the families told R.Mukhia engineer(civil)
The met department has issued heavy rain warning in up coming day due to which it seem that the water level will rise so we take the responsibilities to take all the affected family to safer place added Mukhia.
Though the 6 days of rain has troubled the Kalimpong Sub Division but until now no untoward news has been reported.
What is of concern is that we have had deficient precipitation in the whole of June 2013 and first week of July and rainfall normally peaks in July and August before starting to decline in September. Not surprisingly, many of the major landslide disasters have taken place late in the monsoon season told Praful Roy founder of Save The Hills .
