MIRIK
17 Aug 2013
Even
as more than 200 GJM leaders and activists have been arrested from all
over the Darjeeling Hills over the past week or so, Mirik witnessed the
first such arrest only today . GJM youth wing leader Suresh Tamang was
picked up this morning and produced before Kurseong sub-divisional
court. According to police sources, Tamang has been charged under IPC
sections 143, 145, 186, 135 and 120B and has been denied bail.
Expressing resentment over Tamang’s
arrest, GJM youth wing central committee member Anjul Chauhan said, “The
state government is using the police to arrest GJM leaders, activists
and GTA Sabha members without proper evidence. This is its ploy to
suppress our movement. However, we won’t let them succeed.”
He said that in spite of all types of
foul play by the government, the demand for Gorkhaland, which is a
constitutional one, will be conceded one day. The Gorkhaland agitation
has become a mass agitation and the government will soon understand the
power of the masses, he remarked.
Chauhan further said the state
government is denying Gorkhas the basic rights of speech and expression.
He informed a central committee meeting would be called to discuss the
issue of the arrests.
