A consultation workshop on Earthquake Resistant House Design


Gangtok, 21st October 2011: A consultation workshop on Earthquake
Resistant House Design was held at the conference hall of Rural
Managament and Development Department, today. Consultation workshop on
the aftermath of the earthquake was attended by Dr. Ravi Chopra and
Shri Rajesh Kumar - representatives of People’s Science Institute a
Dehradun based NGO. The objective of the workshop was to learn from
the expertise of the Peoples Science Institute who  have long
experience in the field of earthquake safe/resistance housing. The
members from the institute visited the parts of earthquake affected
areas of North and East Sikkim during the last two days to see for
themselves the types of damages causes by the recent earthquake that
hit the state. The workshop chaired by Secretary RMDD was attended by
the civil engineers, architects, representatives from NGO’s and
administrators.
Dr. Ravi Chopra while talking about the various activities of PSI said
that disaster mitigation and response, environmental quality
monitoring and developing innovations for preparedness, mitigation,
relief and rescue are the major thrust area of the institute.
Shri Rajesh Kumar, during his presentation “DHARTI HIL JAAYE JAN NA
JAAYE” discussed about the various methodologies which can be adopted
for the construction of earthquake safe houses. During his
presentation he gave examples of various earthquakes around the
country and the types of damages  occurred in the houses during the
earthquake. Strressing on the various types of damages caused due to
earthquake during his presentation he also dealt on the various
methodologies which can be adopted while constructing houses inorder
to make them earthquake safe houses.
Dr. Sandeep Thambe Additional Secretary, RMDD during his presentation
on “ Rural Housing – Post Earthquake Strategy” talked about structural
weakness of the houses damaged by the earthquake and structural
strength of the houses which withstood the earthquake.
Shri Doniv Rai, Sr. Architect, RMDD made a presentation on the layout
of architectural drawings for Houses under Chief Minister Rural
Housing Mission which was discussed at length during the workshop.
The workshop after the deliberations and discussions decided to design
the earthquake safe houses under the Chief Minister Rural Housing
Mission based on the feedback received from the stakeholders including
the architects, civil engineers, NGO’s and the representatives of the
Peoples Science Institute.
