The Bandi Mukti Committee, which is working to provide justice to statehood supporters under arrest, has firmed up to create social pressure on the state government. A representative group of the BMC comprising members from Kolkata and Siliguri today met the families of the arrested people and assured them of making efforts for their immediate release.
BMC secretary Choton Das, vice president Prof. Abhijeet Kumar Roy and several other members met the families of GJM vice president Kalyan Dewan, GTA sabhasad Nima Tamang and others and collected detailed information about their arrest. The BMC representatives were accompanied by CPRM leaders Arun Ghatani, Mohan Poudyel and Sudan Pradhan.
The BMC first met CPRM leaders to discuss the present political situation in the hills. They also collected reports of the alleged atrocities committed by the state government. The BMC leaders noted that since the GJM supporters were arrested for a political cause, they are entitled to various facilities in prison but this is not the case.
The committee representatives also met GJM leaders such as Kumar Chamling, Prem Chettri and Subh Prasad where Roy condemned the state government for the blanket arrests of people.
He said, “Everyone has the right to agitate and carry on political programmes to demand their rights. The arrest of the leaders through a conspiracy is a direct violation of human rights and is sheer injustice. We will first collect data and then prepare a fact finding report. Following this, we will try to create a suitable ambience for the release of the arrested people.”
