Darjeeling

Darjeeling town wore a desolated look
today on the first day of the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee-led
‘ghar bhitra janta’ (people remaining indoors) agitation even as chief
minister Mamata Banerjee made her way up to Kalimpong to attend a
felicitation programme by the Lepcha community on Tuesday.
The chief minister interacted with
district administration officials and took stock of the situation in the
hills given the ongoing statehood agitation led by the Gorkha Janmukti
Morcha.
On August 30, the GJAC, a conglomerate
of seven political and apolitical bodies, including the GJM, announced a
two-day ‘ghar bhitra janta’ programme on September 2 and 3, which would
transform into the ‘sadak ma janta’ (people outside their homes)
agitation from the next day onwards.
“The people have made the programme
successful. The town looked like a cantonment as only security forces
were on the streets,” said GJAC chairman Enos Das Pradhan.
He also expressed hope of some positive
response coming forth within a few days from the centre. “Former and
present MPs and MLAs are presently in New Delhi trying to meet UPA
leaders. We hope to get some kind of response from Delhi within a few
days,” said Pradhan.
Meanwhile, the GJAC delegation today met
Congress general secretary CP Joshi and apprised him of the situation
in the Darjeeling hills.
“We met the Congress general secretary
and informed him about the current situation. He said he was aware of
everything and that he would try to do something to solve the problem,”
said Darjeeling MLA Trilok Dewan over phone from Delhi.
The delegation is likely to meet Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Tuesday.
